Southeast Asian swim champs to begin


The 35th Southeast Asian Age Group Swimming Championships are scheduled to kick off next Friday in the central coastal city of Da Nang.

The three-day event will attract nearly 300 swimmers from Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. The competitors will be divided into three age groups, U-12s, 13-14 and 15-17, who will compete for 122 sets of medals.

Viet Nam will send 51 athletes to the annual event with the participation of the nation's leading young swimmers such as Da Nang-based Hoang Quy Phuoc, who has become the first Vietnamese athlete to secure a place at the London 2012 Olympics after clocking 53.56 seconds in the men's 100m butterfly at the recent Malaysian Open.

Sixteen-year-old Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen of HCM City who bagged 16 gold medals to help her team finish first at the recent National Short-Course Swimming Championships will also be competing.


Binh Duong triumph at nationals


The Binh Duong team surprised many by winning the National Bodybuilding Clubs Cup which wrapped up at the Dong Nai Gymnasium over the weekend.

With six gold, six silver and six bronze medals, they defeated former champions Lam Dong and other strong rivals such as An Giang, Dong Nai and Ha Noi who have recently been competing in tough international events to take the title.

Dong Nai finished second with six gold, one silver and two bronze medals, while Ha Noi came in third with three gold and six silver medals.

The event drew the participation of more than 100 athletes from 22 clubs nationwide, competing for 13 sets of medals in both men's and women's disciplines.


Hung wins Ocean Dunes Club champs


Tran Ngoc Hung has won the men's title at the Ocean Dunes Club Championship in the southern coastal city of Phan Thiet.

Hung took the men's gross member division with a score of 152 after two rounds, while Pham Thi Thu Hoa won the ladies event with 183.

South Korean Kim Kyu triumphed in the men's net with 138 after 36-holes.

The Guest Division title went to South Korean Kang Jun-suk, who scored 154 over two rounds.

The tournament, which drew 80 golfers, saw the top 10 players qualify for the Mercedes Viet Nam Trophy Qualifiers, which are scheduled to take place at the Song Be Golf Course on June 25.
