International expert to train HCM City's badminton coaches

International coach Asep Suharno will train HCM City's badminton coaches, the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has announced.

Asep coached Vietnamese top badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh who ranks seventh in the world.

As the Indonesian national coach from 2001-05, Suharno has coached many big names in world badminton, including 2004 Olympic Champion Taufik Hidayat and 2004 bronze medallist Sony Dwi Kuncoro.

In an attempt to regain domestic dominance in badminton and build a pool of young players for future, the city will spend nearly VND9 billion (US$409,000) on badminton development this event this year.


Up to 1,000 martial artists take part in youth taekwondo champs


Nearly 1,000 martial artists took part in HCM City's Youth Taekwondo Championships which closed at Van Don Gymnasium on Monday.

Young athletes aged from 11 to 20 played in combat and performance events.

The organisers said the event was the chance for them to search for young talents for the second Youth Olympics 2014 in China and upcoming international tournaments.


Long An take top prize at volleyball championships


Long An triumphed over Trang An Ninh Binh 3-2 in the final match to win the Hoa Lu Cup volleyball championships which wrapped up in the northern province of Ninh Binh on Monday.

Sanest Khanh Hoa came to third after defeating Viet Nam National Oil and Gas Group 1-3.

The event, which attracted five teams that played in a round robin format, provided an excellent chance for the teams to prepare for the coming National Volleyball Championships 2011.


Viet Nam to compete in first Asian judo kata champs


Five Vietnamese martial artists will compete in the first Asian Judo Kata (performance) Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, today, March .

Among them are Nguyen Thanh Tai and Nguyen Ngoc Son who won gold medals at the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Laos.

The event, which draws athletes from 40 countries and territories to compete in five categories including Nage Nokata, Kateme Nokata, Kime Kata, Juno Kata and Kodokang Goshin Jujitsu, will conclude this Sunday.
