HCM City honours best athletes and coaches



HCM City held a ceremony on December 23 to reward athletes and coaches who won high prizes at the recent 26th Southeast Asian Games (SEA) in Indonesia.

The city athletes clinched 19 gold, 17 silver and 30 bronze medals, helping Vietnam secure the third place at the Games.

The Vice Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee, Hua Ngoc Thuan lauded the athletes’ contributions to the success of the Vietnamese sports delegation at the Games and said that the city will invest more in key sporting events and school sports to encourage new talents for the future.

Representatives from the city’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism conferred Labour Orders on chess players Le Quang Liem and Lam Minh Chau for their brilliant performance at the 26th SEA Games.

The Municipal People’s Committee granted certificates of merit to 56 individuals and rewards of VND45million for a gold medal, VND25 million for a silver and VND15 million for a bronze.

The city’s department of Culture, Sports and Tourism also presented certificates of merit to nine collectives and 108 individuals for their outstanding achievements at the SEA Games.

Int’l cycling tournament starts

The ADC-Vinh Long Television 2011International Cycling Tournament kicked off in Can Tho city on December 25.

This is the first international 800km tournament running through the Mekong Delta provinces of Soc Trang, Hau Giang, An Giang, Tra Vinh, Dong Thap, and Tien Giang, and finishing in Vinh Long city on December 31.

It has attracted strong Vietnamese teams including those from Hanoi, Military Zone 7, Sai Gon Plant Protection, Vinamit HCM City, Binh Duong, An Giang Plant Protection, Domesco Dong Thap, Can Tho, ADC-Television Vinh Long and two foreign teams from the Netherlands and Laos.

The organizing board will follow the International Cycling Union (ICU) rules for the event. The tournament has total prize money of more than VND300 million.

Japanese company sponsors football squads

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has signed a US$1.65 million contract with Japan’s Dentsu Company to sponsor Vietnam’s national football teams for one year from 2012-2013.

VFF president Nguyen Trong Hy signed the agreement during his working visit to Japan after Vietnam's U23 team returned home following their losses at the 26th SEA Games.

Hy said the sponsorship money will be used to finance local and overseas training for the national teams as well as to hold tournaments for them to gain more playing experience.

Including the Japanese sponsorship, the total budget for the national football teams in 2012 will be about VND20 billion (US$0.95 million).

Hy said the annual international tournaments held by the VFF will have a new format, which has not yet been revealed.

Marksmen prepare for Asian shooting championships

Vietnam will participate in the 2012 Asian Shooting Championships, scheduled for Doha, Qatar, from January 11-22.

The Vietnamese shooting team to the champs includes outstanding athletes such as Xuan Vinh, Quoc Cuong and Minh Thanh, who are considered Vietnam’s top seed.

The event will be a good chance for them to qualify for the 35 quota places at the 2012 London Olympics.

At present, the marksmen are meeting for training at the National Sports and Physical Training Centre in Hanoi.

On December 25, they will leave for a one-month intensive training program in the Republic of Korea.

Ceremony honors young winners of int’l competitions

A ceremony was held in Hanoi on December 22 to honour students, athletes and coaches who won prizes at international contests.

Six students from Hanoi won three silvers and three bronzes at the International Junior Science Olympiad which was recently held in Durban, South Africa.

Meanwhile, Hanoi’s athletes have also made good performances at the recent 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia, taking 36 gold, 31 silver and 31 bronze medals. Especially, Vietnamese Taekwondo martial artist Chu Hoang Dieu Linh secured a spot to participate in the 2012 London Olympics.

At the ceremony, the Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee presented more than VND100 million to students and athletes for their outstanding achievements this year.
