Nguyen places second at Asian taekwondo champs

Ha Thi Nguyen won Viet Nam a silver medal at the Asian Taekwondo Championship, which ended in the Philippines on Wednesday.

Nguyen lost 5-10 to Chuang Chia Chia of Chinese Taipei in the final of the women’s U67kg category.

Earlier her teammate Truong Thi Kim Tuyen pocketed a bronze medal in the women’s 49kg class.

She was defeated 4-7 by Thai Panipak Wongpattakit in the semi-final match. Wongpattakit went on to win the gold medal.

In the previous competition two years ago, Viet Nam took two silver and one bronze.

Tam, An Giang make history at HCM City cycling cup

Nguyen Thanh Tam added another stage win after his triumph yesterday at the HCM City Television Cycling Cup.

Tam of An Giang completed the 11th stage, 45km around Quy Nhon City, with a time of 1hr 2.18min.

Huynh Thanh Tung of Military Zone 7 came in second, followed by Le Van Duan of VUS HCM City.

With the win, Tam strengthens his top position in the overall rankings and increases his lead over his rivals.

Tam now has three jerseys: yellow, green and polka dot. His team replaces VUS HCM City in the team ranking.

They made history at the annual tournament by holding all four titles at the same time.

The 12th stage is from Quy Nhon to Tuy Hoa of Phu Yen Province on 116 km.

Binh Duong’s Phuong advances to national semis

Nguyen Van Phuong of Binh Duong took a berth in the semi-finals of the National Men’s Tennis Championships after beating Pham Nhat Minh of Thanh Hoa 6-3, 7-5 yesterday in Hue.

Phuong will play HCM City’s Le Phuoc Dang in the next round of the U18 category.

In the other semis, Ho Ha Hai Nam of Thanh Hoa will meet Le Trung Tinh of Military.

In the over-18 class, Pham Minh Tuan from Da Nang will face Military’s Pham Cong Tien in the quarter-final match.

Nguyen Dac Tien of Ha Noi set a meet with Pham Huu Vinh of HCM City. Da Nang representative Le Khac Tung Lam will play Trieu Van Cuong from Soc Trang and Nguyen Thanh Trung of People’s Police will play Hanoian Trịnh Linh Giang.

U12, U14 and U16 events were held yesterday in a round-robin format. U18 and over-18 pools also played doubles matches.

The tournament will end Sunday.

Phong Phu Ha Nam wins women’s U19 event

Phong Phu Ha Nam beat Viet Nam Coal and Minerals 2-1 to triumph in the National Women’s U19 Football Championship yesterday in Ha Nam Province.

Nguyen Thi Nu opened the score 10 minutes after the break with a straight header. She doubled the result 15 minutes later when faced with an empty net.

Nguyen Thi Van narrowed the score, also with a header, by the end of the game.

After six rounds, Phong Phu Ha Nam had 13 points and took home the trophy for the third time.

Viet Nam Coal and Minerals became the former champions, taking second place this year.

Phong Phu Ha Nam’s Le Thi Cuc played well. She shared the title of most goals scored with Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang of Viet Nam Coal and Minerals, with three goals each. Do Thi Hai Yen of Phong Phu Ha Nam was the best goalkeeper.
