VN karate artists win two silvers, two bronzes in Indonesia

Viet Nam's karate team picked up two silver medals and two bronze to rank eighth in the medal tally at the 2014 Indonesia Open Karate Championships which closed in Jakarta on Sunnday.

In the female kata (performance) individual event, Japan's Rimi Kajikawa took home gold after defeating world champion Nguyen Hoang Ngan of Viet Nam.

Nguyen Minh Phung was the runner-up in the men's kumite (combat) U84kg category after losing to Soltni Kalvanagh Mahdi of Iran in the final.

Viet Nam's two kumite bronzes went to Tran Thi Khanh Vy (women's U50kg) and Bui Thi Ngoc Han (women's U61kg).

Iran bagged seven of the 13 gold medals on offer for the championship title. Japan finished in second place with three gold, followed by South Korea one gold.

HCM City dominate at junior tennis tournament

HCM City grabbed the top slot at the National Junior Tennis Championships which ended in Soc Trang Province on Monday.

The tennis hub won six titles, followed by the host which pocketed four golds and Binh Duong with two.

More than 230 athletes from 22 teams took part in the annual tournament, competing in eight categories of boys' and girls' singles and doubles events.

Vinh Phuc win junior shooting championships

Marksman Bui Anh Tung won gold medals in the boy's 10m air rifle individual and team events to help Vinh Phuc win the National Junior Air Rifle Championships in Da Nang on Monday.

The team finished with 10 golds, three silvers and three bronzes.

HCM City finished second with six golds while Quang Nam ended third, bagging four titles. Quang Nam's Ho Viet Sang completed the last competition day on Monday with a new record in the boy's 10m air rifle.

He marked 580 points to pass the old record of 569.

Huynh Thi Mai Khuyen of Quang Nam also set a new record in the girl's U18 Air Rifle Running Target with a result of 312.

HCM City added to the championship records in the 10m air rifle event with 985 points, surpassing the previous record by eight points.

Viet Nam finish second at SEA swimming championships

Viet Nam finished second at the 2014 Southeast Asian Swimming Championships which wrapped up yesterday in Singapore.

With 12 gold, four silver and four bronze medals, Viet Nam missed out on top place to the hosts Singapore, who won golds, 22 silvers and 14 bronzes. Indonesia finished third with nine golds.

The tournament, held at the OCBC Aquatic Centre in Singapore Sports Hub from June 14-24, gathered swimmers from six Southeast Asian countries including Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand.

"Having emerged as the top ASEAN country at this year's championships, we have given a good account of ourselves. We are confident of a good showing at next year's SEA Games," Singapore Swimming Association President Lee Kok Choy said in a press release.

Vietnam, Algeria push sport partnership

Vietnam and Algeria have agreed to deepen their sport cooperation following the spirit of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in April 2010.

The agreement was reached at a working session between deputy head of the Vietnam Sport Administration under the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism, Lam Quang Thanh, and Algerian Minister of Youth and Sports, Mohamed Tahmi, as part of the former’s recent tour.

The three-day visit, which started on June 21, aims to promote an action plan and proposals in the field conforming to the 2010-2014 MoU and the 10th session of the Vietnam-Algeria Intergovernmental Committee held in Hanoi from January 8-10, 2014, respectively.

During the 10th session, both countries were unanimous to step up all-around affiliation in economics, agriculture, information and communications, housing and urban development, among others.

Vietnamese martial arts, Vovinam, have become popular in the North African country, evidenced by the establishment of the Algeria Vovinam Federation (FAVV) last August.

There are about 8,000 martial artists practising in 140 Vovinam clubs across the country.
