Vietnamese tennis team earn spot in Davis Cup Group II

The Vietnamese tennis team beat their rivals from Hong Kong (China) 2-0 in the final Group III play-off on March 28, moving on to play in the Asia/Oceania Zone Group II at next year’s Davis Cup season.

Playing strong, Nguyen Hoang Thien defeated his more experienced opponent Phillip King in only 55 minutes in the first singles match.

The second singles match witnessed the competition between two young players, Ly Hoang Nam from Vietnam and Andrew Li from Hong Kong. Unfortunately, Hoang Nam suffered a 4-6 loss to his rival in the first set.

However, Nam lit up hopes for Vietnam by finishing off Andrew Li 6-3 and 6-2 in the second and third sets, respectively.

With the consecutive victories of two young players in singles matches, the two countries agreed not to play in the doubles match.

The 2-0 victory helped Vietnam earn a spot in Group II next year.
