Việt Nam are ready to compete in the Asian Women’s U19 Volleyball Championship to be held in northern Bắc Ninh Province on June 10-17.

Coach Phạm Minh Dũng selected 14 players for the event including strikers Bùi Thị Bích Phương and Đoàn Thị Mỹ Tiên and libero Đàm Thị Thùy Linh.

Việt Nam are in Group A with defending champion China, Japan and Thailand. Group B consists of South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Kazakhstan and India. Group C includes China’s two special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao, Australia and Iran; and Group D has Malaysia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan.

As scheduled, Việt Nam will face Thailand on the opening day of June 10. The host next meet China on June 11 and Japan on June 12.

At the previous championship in 2016 in Thailand, China finished first, followed by Japan, Thailand and Việt Nam.

The Asian Women’s U19 Volleyball Championship is a biennial volleyball competition in Asia and Oceania contested by the under-19 women’s teams of the members of the Asian Volleyball Confederation.

Việt Nam Coal and Mineral defeated Phong Phú Hà Nam 1-0 in the first leg’s fifth round of the National Women’s Football Championship on June 3.

The game was held at Hà Nam Stadium in the northern province of Hà Nam.

With this win, Coal and Mineral rose to second place out of seven teams with 10 points, while the hosts Hà Nam maintained their fourth place with seven points.

Although the two teams made every effort, no goals were scored in the first half.

After the break, Nguyễn Thị Hậu broke the deadlock for Coal and Mineral in the 74th minute, scoring off a pass from one of her teammates.

On the same day, Hà Nội crushed Thái Nguyên 5-0 to top the rankings with 13 points.

Cantho Catfish beat HCM City Wings 100-74 in a Việt Nam Basketball Association (VBA) league preseason game at Hồ Xuân Hương Gymnasium in HCM City on Sunday.

Taking full advantage of playing at home, the Wings led the Catfish 23-22 after the first quarter.

The Catfish fought back in the next period, pouring in 29 points to lead 52-40 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Wings struggled to get buckets, scoring only 16 points to trail to the Catfish 56-78 entering the final stanza.

Coach Kevin Yurkus of the Catfish used many young players in the fourth quarter. Taking this chance, the Wings controlled the game. However, they couldn’t make a comeback and lost 74-100.

DeAngelo Hamilton of the Catfish was the MVP of the game with 24 points.

The Wings will next meet Saigon Heat at CIS Arena in HCM City on June 9.
