First Men’s Futures Tournament wraps up
Jose Statham from New Zealand earned the championship title and a cash prize of US$1,300 at the first 2012 Tanimex Men’s Futures Cup, which closed in Ho Chi Minh City on April 8.
A team from India won the double event and took home more than US$600.
The second 2012 Men’s Futures tourney will take place at the Hoang Thien Club in District 8 from April 9-15 and the third tournament will be held at the Phu Tho Club from April 16-24.
Nguyen Van Ngoan, Deputy General Director of the Tanimex Company and deputy head of the organizing board, said Ho Chi Minh City has not organized such a professional tournament for a long time.
He added that Minh Quan passed the qualifying round while doubles team Minh Quan and Quoc Khanh got as far as the semi-finals. This is a good result for Vietnamese athletes because they are often knocked out in the qualifying rounds of international tournaments.
Vietnam competes to host 18th Asian Games
The Vietnam Olympic Committee is trying its best in the race for hosting the 18th Asian Games in 2019.
Vietnam is in fierce competition with the strongest candidates, including the United Arab Emirates, Taiwan and Indonesia.
However, Vietnam has the advantages of political stability, support from the Olympic Council of Asia (AOC) and good infrastructure facilities with many high quality sports complexes capable of hosting international competitions, including My Dinh National Stadium, Quan Ngua Sports Complex and other facilities in Ninh Binh, Hai Duong, Hai Phong and Bac Ninh provinces.
In addition, the country has gained important experience after its successful organization of the 22nd SEA Games and the 3rd Asian Indoor Games.
If it is selected, Vietnam will organize 35 events, including the 26 compulsory Olympic events, in November or December 2019 for the 19 day games.
Local volleyball players to compete at 2012 Asian Beach Games
Vietnam’s volleyball team will take part in the third Asian Beach Games – Haiyang 2012, which will be held in China from June 16-22.
The Games is expected to attract 80 teams, 52 male and 28 female, from 29 countries and territories around the world. They will compete in 13 sporting events for 49 sets of medals.
This is a good opportunity for Vietnamese volleyball players to gain more experience from regional and international tournaments.
U22 team to battle Chinese Taipei
Viet Nam's U22 football team will meet Chinese Taipei in their first match in Group G at the U22 Asian Cup 2013 qualifying round in Myanmar on June 23.
They will then meet Myanmar on June 25, the Philippines on June 28, Malaysia on June 30 and South Korea on July 3.
Despite beating South Korea 1-0 in the 2010 U19 Asian Cup qualifiers, they are still regarded as Viet Nam's strongest opponents.
A round-robin format will decide the top 15 teams who will be joined by the host nation in the final stages of the event.
National boxing event to kick off
The National Boxing Clubs Cup will start on April 12 at the Lao Cai Gymnasium in the northern province of Lao Cai.
Top athletes will be selected to compete at the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar. At the 26th Games in Indonesia last year, Vietnamese boxer Luong Van Toan took home a gold medal in the men's U81kg category.
The event will draw 25 strong clubs from across the country.
Eight teams set for championships
The final round of the National U19 Football Championships is scheduled to take place at Da Nang's Chi Lang Stadium from April 16-24.
The event will attract eight teams including Song Lam Nghe An, Ha Noi, SHB Da Nang, Dong Nai, Thai Nguyen, Dong Thap, Navibank Sai Gon and Binh Duong.
The winners will be awarded VND60 million (US$2,800), while the runners-up will take VND40 million ($1,900) and the two third-placed teams will take VND25 million ($1,200) each.
U19 footballers to join int'l friendly
Viet Nam's U19 football team will take part in an international friendly tournament in Palestine from May 14-22.
The event will attract teams from Viet Nam, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Mauritania, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tunisia and Uzbekistan.
The best teams will be selected from three groups after competing in a round-robin format for the semi-finals.
The team will meet on April 22 for training in preparation for the event, before flying to Palestine on May 11.
