HCM City overpowers opposition at swimming championships

Nguyen Diep Phuong Tram set two records and won gold medals as HCM City dominated at the National Junior Swimming Championship with 25 golds, 22 silvers and 24 bronzes.

Binh Phuoc bagged six golds, while Quang Binh won five golds, six silvers and four bronzes.

Tram, 13, set up a new record in the girl's 50m butterfly event with a time of 28.59sec, surpassing by 2.10sec of the old record (30.49sec).

She then clocked the 200m backstroke event in 2min 28.31sec (the old record was 2:33.60).

HCM City's Tran Duy Khoi and Nguyen Ngoc Trien from Hai Phong both broke the record in the boy's 200m backstroke event.

Khoi, however, won a gold and set a new record with a time of 2: 07.28. The old record was 2:09.93 set by Do Huy Long from Ha Noi in 2005.

Tran Thi Hong Cam of Long An surpassed her own record in the girl's 200m freestyle with a time of 2:10.56. Her old record was 2min 13.63sec.

This is her second record and gold medal at the championship.

Teenager Tien progresses into national quarter-finals

Nguyen Dac Tien made a big bang yesterday beating Ho Huynh Dan Mach to enter the quarter-finals of the National Men's Tennis Championships in Dak Lak Province.

Tien, 15, of Ha Noi overcame Mach of Military 6-0, 0-6, 6-2 in the over-18 category and will play against Tran Ngoc Hien, another soldier, in the next round.

Hien yesterday won 6-4, 6-2 over Bui Thai Luan of HCM City.

Earlier, Huynh Chi Khuong had defeated Vu Artern 6-1, 6-1 in an all-Military match.

Hanoian Hoang Thanh Trung sent Military's Le Cong Tien home after a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Khuong will face Trung in the second quarter-final match. Meanwhile, Tran Hoang Anh Khoa easily trounced Nguyen Tuan Anh from HCM City 6-3, 6-2. He will next face Vo Van Toan of Da Nang who moved to the last-eighth round after his rival Tran Thanh Hoang of Military withdrew.

In the U18 doubles event today, Le Trung Tinh and Pham Duy Thuc of the Military will play against Minh Tri and Nhat Hoang in the first semi-final match. The second will see Marshall David and Phuong of Binh Duong versus

Van Son and Viet Hoang, another Vinh Phuc duo.

Victory for Da Nang gives them place in last eight

SHB Da Nang defeated Dong Thap 5-3 in the last-eight round of the National Cup yesterday.

Ho Ngoc Thang scored a hattrick while Duy Lam and Huynh Quoc Anh grabbed a goal each.

Dong Thao narrowed the score following a penalty from Nguyen Thanh Hien and a header from Minh Loi.

In other matches, Ha Noi T&T lost 3-5 to Dak Lak after a penalty shootout, Hoang Anh Gia Lai beat Dong Nai 5-1, and Quang Ninh Coal overcame Khanh Hoa 2-1.

VTV Women’s Volleyball Cup opens in Bac Ninh

The 2014 VTV International Women’s Volleyball Cup opened on May 17 in the northern province of Bac Ninh.

This year’s tournament drew the participation of one local team and five interantional teams from Thailand, Australia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Kazakhstan and China.

The six teams will play in a round-robin format, from which the top four teams will advance to the semi-finals. The tournament will conclude with the bronze medal and championship games.

According to the organising board, most of the Vietnamese team’s members are young and the tournament is an opportunity for the young players to compete and gain experience. Volleyball talents are expected to be discovered at the tournament.

All matches will be broadcast live on VTV6 and VTV6 HD.
