The decision was announced at the sixth conference of the Central Military Commission for the 2020-2025 tenure in Hanoi on July 3, which was presided over by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who is also secretary of the commission.
The conference aimed to evaluate the leadership’s results in performing military and defense, as well as Party building tasks in the first six months of the year, and undertake key tasks in the last six months of the year.
Earlier, Thuong was also appointed by the Politburo to join the Public Security Central Party Committee and the Standing Board of the Committee for the 2020 – 2025 tenure.
The decision was signed on March 23 by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, on behalf of the Politburo.
Thuong, 53, was elected State President of Vietnam at an extraordinary session of the National Assembly in early March 2023.
According to the Constitution, the President is the head of state who commands the people’s armed forces and holds the position of Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council.
