VietNamNet Bridge – The Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources has concluded that the biological samples in the ready-made clothing of a woman in the northern province of Phu Yen are the larvae of two species of hoverflies.

The Institute’s director - Associate Professor Le Xuan Canh, said on January 24 that the larvae did not die when they were soaked in pesticides or kerosene because those flies live in polluted environment, especially polluted water so their adaptation to toxic drugs is very high.

Canh said they may die soon if they are soaked in clean water.

The expert added that hoverflies can carry pathogens, pathogenic microorganisms, but the level of danger is not serious. Being exposed to these larvae does not affect health, so people do not have to worry or panic.

As the institute did not directly take the samples so experts cannot determine the origin of these larvae.

On January 13, Ms. Ngo Thi Kim Oanh in Quang Hung Hoa village, Hoa Quang Nam commune, purchased ready-made clothes at the market of Nho Lam in Hoa Quang Bac commune, of Phu Hoa district, Phu Yen province, with the brand Baby Phat.

Oanh soaked the clothes in soapy water for 15 minutes and saw many strange creatures crawling like leeches. She soaked the clothes in kerosene to kill them, but they kept proliferating. Oanh then bought a pack of herbicides to pour into the basin but the creatures did not die.

Finally, the woman dug a hole and buried the strange creatures with salt and lime. After one night, the next morning they found the creatures lying still on the surface of the lime and salt.
