Four Vietnamese students studying at Portland State University, have recently won first prize at the Cornell Cup USA 2012. 



Vo Duy Thang, Nguyen Van Hoa, Nguyen Minh Hung and Ngo Viet Anh invented a Prescription Drug Identification device (PDI), which is capable of minimizing time, increasing accuracy and providing instant, detailed drug information to both patients and doctors.

The PDI with camera will capture images of drugs and then extract all drug characteristics such as imprint code, shape, colour, etc, through image processing techniques. These features will be cross checked with either a built-in offline file or an enormous online database to provide the information needed.

The Cornell Cup USA, founded and sponsored by Intel, Tektronik and Sunstone groups, is a college-level embedded design competition created to empower student teams to become the inventors of the newest innovative applications of embedded technology.

For this year’s contest, beginning in October 2011, 23 teams were selected and commenced their projects through May 2012.

At the finals, the top three entries win grand prizes set at US$10,000, US$5,000, and US$2,500.
