VietNamNet Bridge - Vice Chair of the Vietnam Chess Federation Dang Tat Thang said the sponsorship deal for Vietnam’s top chess player Le Quang Liem may be ended because Liem did not comply with the agreement.
Le Quang Liem and his parents.
According to the contract signed in 2011, Quang Liem will receive $150,000 from the sponsor in the period of 2012-2015. However, Liem must not study overseas but focus on the chess career.
However, Liem went to the US last year to study at the Webster in the US so the contract may be revised.
Another leading chess player of Vietnam – Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son – also signed a similar contract.
The sponsor for Quang Liem and Truong Son is the company owned by the Chair of the Vietnam Chess Federation.
According to the contracts, two players will be receiving a total of $200,000 to compete at international tournaments and hire coaches. Since Quang Liem went to the U.S., his focus on chess and the number of tournaments he participated in has reduced.
According to the Secretary General of the Vietnam Chess Federation Nguyen Phuoc Trung, Quang Liem has received $18,000 from the sponsor and Truong Son also received $8,000. The amount is not sufficient for the two players to spend on the planned targets.
Trung said the Vietnam Chess Federation is seeking an alternative sponsor.
