There are only five swans left on the Tam Bac River.

The first birds were released into the river by local authorities in May 2019 in a project to build a pedestrian street along the river.

The project has received support from local people and organisations who donated more swans, bringing the total number of swans being released into the river to 200.

Haiphong has designed a raft underneath the bridge as a shelter for the swans. Local authorities have called on people to protect the city’s environment, including the area around the river.

However, many swans have died.

Speaking to Dantri/Dtinews, chairman of Hong Bang District People's Committee, Pham Van Doan, said that there were now only five swans left while all others have died due to water pollution or left the river."
