VietNamNet Bridge – Top Vietnam swimming star Nguyen Thi Anh Vien stirred the waters at the 2013 Southeast Asian (SEA) Age-group Swimming Championships by taking home an amazing 11 gold and two silver medals and establishing a new SEA Games record in the women’s 200m backstroke event.

The event, which transpired in Brunei on June 7-9, saw roughly 230 athletes from Vietnam, Thailand, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, swimming for medals in under-13, 14-15 and 16-18 age groups.
The 17 year old Vietnam swimmer swam in 13 events of the 16-18 age group and took home 11 gold and two silver medals, in addition to breaking seven championship records including 200m freestyle with results of 2:03.52, 200m backstroke within 2:14.95, 400m mixed at 4:52.83, 400m freestyle at 4:16.46, 100m backstroke of 1:03.3, 200m mixed at 2: 17.90, and 50m freestyle within 27.02.
Especially, Anh Vien set new SEA Games record in the women’s 200m backstroke event when clocking at 2:14.95, breaking Indonesian Yessy Yosaputra’s 2011 SEA Games record of 2:15.73.
After ending the three-day competition, the Vietnam team finished in fourth place behind Singapore who were crowned champions with 29 gold, 24 silver, 25 bronze medals. Thailand ranked second with 28 gold, 40 silver and 24 bronze medals, followed in third by Malaysia with their total of 24 golds, 18 silvers and 15 bronzes.
The significant accomplishment is expected to inspire Vien to perform well in the upcoming 2013 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games that is scheduled in Incheon, the Republic of Korea, from June 29 to July 6.
