VietNamNet Bridge – Nguyen Thi Anh Vien from the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho took 18 gold medals in the women's swimming category at the National Sports Games 2014, which was held in Nam Dinh City on December 11-15.

Vien took part in 20 categories for individual and team events at the Games. The 18-year-old soldier won 18 of them, including all 12 individual gold medals, setting three national records and 11 Games records. She finished second in the other two races.

Vien’s achievement was anticipated by experts and fans. She won 12 individual gold medals for women’s 50m breaststroke, 200m backstroke, 200m mixed, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 400m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 1,500m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 200m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 200m freestyle.

Under the guidance of American expert Anthony Teeters, Vien proved to be too strong compared to the other swimmers. The Olympic champion also broke two national records and seventh record of the National Sports Games.

Even for the categories that are not her forte - 1,500m freestyle - Vien set a record, with 17 minutes 02 seconds 19, 31 seconds shorter than the runner-up Le Thi My Thao.

Other famous swimmers also competed successfully, including Hoang Quy Phuoc with five gold medals, Tran Duy Khoi with four gold medals, Nguyen Huu Viet with two gold medals and, Lam Quang Nhat with one gold medal.

Earlier, Anh Vien and her coach Teeters attended the 25-meter Pool World Championships in Doha (Qatar) and her results positively changed, although the 25-meter pool is not Vien’s forte.

Anh wins yellow, green jerseys in Trans-Viet cycling race

Do Tuan Anh won the 11th stage of the Trans-Viet cycling tournament to take the overall lead yesterday.

Anh of Domesco Dong Thap 1 secured a second stage win after completing the 116km Bac Kan to Cao Bang City leg in a time of 3hr 16.35.

The veteran successfully conquered five hills during the race and ran away to the finish line.

Anh has stolen the green jersey for the best rider with 193 points, one stage before the tournament wraps up today.

Loic Desriac of ADC-Vinh Long Television came second, followed by Huynh Thanh Tung of Military.

Anh, whose total time of 31:29.46 after 11 stages, has built up a safe distance from the chasing pack.

Nguyen Thanh Tam of Gao Hat Ngoc Troi An Giang is in second and Le Ngoc Son of Domesco Dong Thap 1 is in third.

With two representatives in the top three, Domesco Dong Thap 1 are the current leaders with a time of 94:32.31, followed by ADC and HCM City.

The King of the Mountain title has already been awarded to Hari Fitrianto of Laos' CNN Team, while soldier Tung has been named best youth rider.

Today, cyclists will compete along the final stage that will take them over 43km around Cao Bang City - VNS
