Swimmer Anh Vien wins another medal at Youth Olympics

Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien on August 19 won a silver at the women’s 800m freestyle at the second Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing city, China.

Earlier on August 17, the teenager won a gold medal in the women's 200m individual medley category with a time of 2:12.66. This helped her become the first Vietnamese athlete to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

The 13-day Games opened on August 16 with the participation of 3,800 athletes from 204 countries and territories competing in 28 sports.

Ha Noi dominate handball championships

Ha Noi won three of the four gold medals at the National Junior Handball Championships which ended in Da Nang City yesterday.

The team took the lead in the men's and women's U20 and men's U18 events. Ha Giang triumphed in the women's U18 category.

Ha Noi had won three of the four gold medals at the same event last year.

In a first, HCM City, a major handball centre in the country, didn't win any gold medals.

Sixteen teams from Ha Noi, HCM City, Yen Bai and Ha Giang participated in the eight-day event.

Handball is become popular in Viet Nam and has been included in the annual National Sport Games.

S Korean sinks hole-in-one

South Korean golfer Lee Jong-young scored a hole-in-one at the province's Montgomerie Links golf course on Monday.

The amateur became the 15th golfer to sink a hole-in-one at the 11th hole since 2009.

The golf course organising committee also offered hole-in-one prizes at the second, fifth and 14th holes. Exactly 60 golfers have won hole-in-one prizes at the golf course since 2009.

Vietnamese Pham Van Tuan recorded the longest hole-in-one shot at 220 yards, which took place at the 14th hole in 2012.

Duan triumphs in cycling event

Veteran cyclist Le Van Duan of HCM City took three awards in the sixth stage of the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta Cycling Tour yesterday.

Duan met no rivals in the finish line to win the 118km stage from Ca Mau City to Soc Trang City in a time of 2:31.20 at an average speed of 46.784km/h.

Duan's teammates Le Nguyet Minh and Truong Nguyen Thanh Nhan were the runners-up.

Duan kept the yellow jersey award with the best overall time of 16:15.13 after six stages and wore the green jersey for best sprinter with 133 points.

Ha Thanh Tam of An Giang Plant Protection wore the white jersey as the best young cyclist.

The team ranking was unchanged. Domesco Pharmacy Dong Thap took the lead with a time of 48:47.57, followed by ADC-Vinh Long Television and Hat Ngoc Troi Rice.

Cyclists are set to compete in the seventh stage from Soc Trang to Can Tho City this morning and the next stage around Can Tho City in the afternoon.
