The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Office recently released conclusions from Vice Chairman Bui Xuan Cuong following a site inspection of Metro Line 6 (Phase 1: Tan Son Nhat International Airport-Phu Huu) conducted on May 26.
According to the notice, city authorities have set a target of approving the route alignment within June 2026 and completing the final project report by October 2026 to ensure groundbreaking can take place before the end of the year.
To accurately determine station locations within the Tan Son Nhat Airport area, the Department of Planning and Architecture has been tasked with reviewing relevant plans and advising the city government on consultations with ministries, agencies, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.
The city is also placing a strong focus on transit-oriented development (TOD) along the route, including studies on underground urban space planning at Station ST04 on Metro Line 6 and Station ST09 on Metro Line 4.
City leaders have instructed the Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR) to work closely with relevant agencies to carefully review legal issues related to land acquisition and site clearance. The objective is to minimize repeated displacement in areas affected by previously approved projects, thereby reducing disruption to residents and businesses.
Metro Line 6 is one of seven key transportation projects that Ho Chi Minh City plans to prioritize between 2026 and 2030 as part of its goal of expanding the urban railway network to 200 kilometers.
Under the city's master plan, Metro Line 6 will serve as the inner ring urban railway, stretching a total of 53.8 kilometers.
At this stage, authorities are prioritizing legal and administrative procedures for Phase 1, which will run from Tan Son Nhat Airport to Phu Huu. The section will span 22.85 kilometers and is expected to require investment of around VND86.529 trillion (US$3.3 billion).
Once completed, the project will form a strategic transportation corridor, connecting with Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh-Tham Luong) at Ba Queo Station and serving all three terminals (T1, T2 and T3) at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
The route will also directly connect to the Thu Thiem-Long Thanh railway at the Phu Huu interchange, creating an integrated high-capacity transport network linking key urban and regional destinations.
