After securing the team’s first ever gold medal at the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines, the Vietnamese men’s football team has set out new targets for 2020, with a view to achieving qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

The first aim set out by the VFF is for the Vietnamese men’s team is to put in a strong showing at the AFC U23 Championship 2020 finals in Thailand.

During Vietnam’s last participation in the competition the team finished as runner-up in the AFC U23 Championship 2018. For the upcoming tournament, the national U23 team are aiming to get to the semi-finals, winning a place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the process.

Along with targets for the AFC U23 Championship, the senior Vietnamese national team is expected to carry on their good form during the remaining matches in the second qualifying round for the 2022 World Cup in the Asian zone.

The VFF expects the team to progress to the final qualifying round and win the right to take part in the final round of the 2023 Asian Cup.

At present Park Hang-seo’s team are leading their group after picking up 11 points with three wins and two draws.

Moreover, the VFF are also keen for Vietnam to defend the AFF Suzuki Cup and are working closely with head coach Park Hang-seo about plans ahead of the tournament.

All of these goals ultimately serve the VFF’s long-term ambition of the Vietnamese men’s football team winning a coveted place at the 2026 World Cup.
