VietNamNet Bridge – A teacher at Vo Van Tan Secondary School in Tan Binh District won first prize in a contest on Powerpoint lesson on wildlife protection.

Hoang Thi Nhu Hien's lecture was part of a seventh grade biology class. Her lecture focused on the risk of wildlife extinction caused by humans.

The contest was organised by Wildlife At Risk (WAR) and the HCM City Department of Education and Training (DOET).

Three-hundred lectures had been submitted since August 22. Of these, 38 used Powerpoint software.

The lessons integrated wildlife protection content in an attractive and effective manner, and were creatively done, Do Thi Thanh Huyen, wildlife education manager, said.

Ho Tan Minh, the department's high school education specialist, said the lectures covered all key lessons, including priority animals for conservation.

The contest is an activity of the SOS Programme launched in Dec 2011 by WAR and the Department of Education and Training.

The SOS programme aims to educate students on wildlife consumption by encouraging them "to say NO" to illegal wildlife products.

Le Xuan Lam, manager of the Cu Chi Wildlife Rescue Station, said that educating young people was the best way to protect wildlife in Viet Nam.

After the awards ceremony held on May 22 at Cu Chi Wildlife Rescue Station, teachers also visited endangered wildlife that had been rescued.

To celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity 2015 on May 22, all participants also pledged not to consume illegal wildlife products by signing a model of a gibbon that is used as an ambassador for the SOS programme.

For the upcoming academic year, the award-winning lectures will be shared among all secondary schools in HCM City for use in the classroom.
