Ten national records broken at swimming championships

Ten national records have been broken after two days of competition at the ongoing National Junior Age-Groups Swimming Championships in Ha Noi.

Nguyen Minh Hien from HCM City set two new records in the boys' U13s.

Hien set a new record in the 50m butterfly with a time of 28.47secs, beating the old record of 28.50secs. The 13-year-old also claimed a new record in the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:04.92, compared to the old record of 2:06.46.

In the boy's 16-18 category, Tran Duy Khoi set a new record in the 200m backstroke event with a time of 2:06.81, beating old record of 2:07.28.

HCM City lead the medals tally after two days with 31 gold, 17 silver and 13 bronze medals. National Defence Sport Centre 5 are second with six gold, one silver and one bronze. Quang Ninh are third with four gold and four silver.

Giang wins yellow jersey as Tuan claims final stage

Do Phuoc Tuan of An Giang's Gao Hat Ngoc Troi won the ninth stage and last stage of the "Return to the Countryside" cycling tournament, while Tuan's teammate Nguyen Hoang Giang won the overall yellow jersey yesterday, May 18.

Tuan clocked a top speed of 39.261 kmph during the 98km stage from Chau Doc to Long Xuyen City in the southern province of An Giang, which he completed in 2:29.46.

Nguyen Hoang Sang of Dam Ca Mau and Tran Nguyen Duy Nhan of the Military Zone 7 finished second and third.

Giang seized the overall yellow jersey with an overall time of 21:34.12 after nine stages, followed by Phan Tuan Vu of Can Tho and Nguyen Minh Thien of Vinh Long.

Cyclist Nhan won the green jersey for best sprinter.

Gao Hat Ngoc Troi won the team event with a combined time of 64:44.58, followed by An Giang Plant Protection and Vinh Long.

This year's tournament attracted 80 athletes from 17 teams, including a Cambodian group. They pedalled through eight provinces and cities over 635km.  

Thanh Hoa signs contract with Senegalese forward

V.League team Thanh Hoa had re-signed a contract with Senegalese forward Pape Omar Faye after FIFA overturned a life-time suspension for Faye, according to club coach Hoang Thanh Tung.

Tung said that Thanh Hoa had registered the striker for the second half of the season.

Faye signed a contract with Thanh Hoa in 2011 and scored 15 goals to help the team finish seventh in the 2011 V.League.
