The birds flock to the island at 6pm every day. They perch on electric wires and the windows of a hotel in the West Village, An Vinh commune.

Ms. Phan Thi Loi, deputy chair of An Vinh commune, says that this is the first time she sees such a huge number of swallows on the island. Normally, the birds come to Ly Son Island in the season of rough sea to avoid wind and then fly away. This time they appear on the island when the sea is very quiet.

The simultaneous sound of thousands of swallows disturbs the area. The owner of Dai Duong Motel complains that the birds drop a lot of feces in front of his motel and even on the heads of passers-by. Thinking that swallows bring good omens, locals do not drive the birds away.

Dr. Vo Quy, from the Center for National Resources and the Environment says that swallows fly through Vietnam twice a year, in the winter or late spring.

According to Quy, swallows fly over the areas with plenty of food such as small insects. They usually stop at one place for a time to accumulate food then continue the journey. Without food for only a single day, a swallow can starve because their muscles are always in the active state.
