The traditional atmosphere and cultural space of the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival in the old days are being introduced and vividly recreated within the framework of an exhibition and trade fair named Tet Viet 2017, which opened at the Vietnam Culture and Arts Exhibition Centre at 2 Hoa Lu Street, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi on January 18.

Jointly organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the concerned agencies from Hanoi and neighbouring locales, the event aims to create the bustling atmosphere of Tet through cultural activities at the event, while enabling the people of the capital city to go shopping and enjoy entertainment during the festival, thereby preserving and promoting traditional cultural values.

Artists from Thuan Thanh District Cultural Centre in Bac Ninh Province performed an ancient quan ho folk song named Moi nuoc moi trau (“Inviting Guests to Enjoy Water When They Arrive at the Hosts’ Home”).





The event gathered more than 80 booths selling quality products that are specialties of regions across the country, including souvenirs, handicraft products, home decorations, agricultural products and Tet flowers, among others.





A rich variety of activities will take place at the event until January 23, including an exhibition namely “Tet Viet with Traditional Handicraft Products,” showcasing nearly 100 handmade products by 25 artisans and skilled craftspersons.




Most famous traditional handicraft products such as sculptured, rattan and bamboo, silk and pottery items, among others, are present at exhibition.

Another highlight of the event is also “Tet Dinh Dau 2017 Paintings Exhibition” with more than 80 works by fifteen Hanoi painters on a variety of materials, focusing on the image of the Rooster, a symbol of prosperity in the upcoming Year of the Rooster.

In particular, artists from Thuan Thanh District, Bac Ninh Province are also introducing to visitors a range of cultural traditions from their land—one of the cradles of Vietnam’s culture, including Dong Ho folk paintings. Visitors are also offered the chance to participate in making Dong Ho paintings.





The highlight of the festival is the showcasing and competition of the Ho chicken, a breed of chicken originating in Bac Ninh, which is considered its real unique character of culture and cuisine. Ho chickens eligible for the contest must weigh from 4.5kg for rooster and from 3.5 kg for hen, with cockscombs, legs and tail feathers reaching standards.





Within the framework of “Tet Viet 2017” there are also various cultural activities, craft village exchanges and folk games.
