SEA Games 33 final medal table reflects Thailand’s dominance and Vietnam’s strong third-place finish.

Total medals awarded: 576 gold, 571 silver, 791 bronze – 1,938 overall

SEA Games 33 concluded with a familiar regional hierarchy, but also revealed several notable developments.

Thailand firmly asserted its status as Southeast Asia’s sports powerhouse with a record-breaking 233 gold medals, outpacing all rivals both in golds and overall count. This dominant performance reflects the combined advantage of home ground, long-term investments in sports development, and depth in both Olympic and traditional events.

A tight race for second place

Just behind the host nation, the battle for the runner-up spot turned into a tense showdown between Indonesia and Vietnam.

Indonesia ultimately claimed second place with 91 gold medals, narrowly edging out Vietnam by four golds. Still, Vietnam showcased impressive depth and resilience, finishing with 278 total medals - including 81 silver and 110 bronze - a testament to its broad competitive reach across diverse disciplines.

With 87 gold medals, Vietnam ended in third place overall. The narrow gap with Indonesia reflects how close the race was up to the final competition days. If Vietnam can improve its gold conversion rate in future editions - turning silvers and bronzes into top-podium finishes - it stands a strong chance of reclaiming the number-two spot.

Signs of progress, promise for the future

In the bigger picture, the SEA Games 33 medal table reaffirms Thailand’s dominance but also signals Vietnam’s sustained momentum and growing competitiveness at the top of the region.

With strategic investment and continued focus on athlete development, Vietnam is well-positioned to challenge for higher standings in future SEA Games.
