The initial nomination list includes “Floating Lives”, a feature film adapted from the controversial short novel by writer Nguyen Ngoc Tu and “The Fate of a Songstress in Thang Long”, another historical film.

“Thang Long Aspiration” obtained nine votes from the selection council while the others finished at eight.

A member of the selection council said that the film satisfies all the content and quality standards as well as meeting the Oscar’s criteria.

Featuring the chaotic transition period of Vietnam’s feudal Le and Ly Dynasty in 9th century, “Thang Long Aspiration” won a silver prize for Best Film and two golden prizes for Best Director and Best Supporting Actor at Vietnam’s Oscar-equivalent Golden Kite Award last year.

The film director – Luu Trong Ninh – told VietNamNet on September 20, that he is very happy but he doesn’t have high hopes that his film will be nominated for the five finalists at the Oscar’s Best Foreign Language Movie Award.

The 84th annual Academy awards will take place at the Kodak theatre in Los Angeles on February 26, 2012.
