The accident occurred at 3am today, July 11, on Highway 47 through Tho The commune in Trieu Son district, Thanh Hoa province.

A black Lifan car was running towards Thanh Hoa City when it supposedly lost control. The car ran to the left roadside, hit some trees before turning upside down and falling into a pond.

Driver Nguyen Van Thin, 25, escaped from the car and shouted for help. About 20 minutes later, the villagers came to rescue the victims. However, four people, including two women and two men, all from Trieu Son district, died of suffocation.

Mr. Duong Van Thanh, 63, the owner of the pond, said he was sleeping alone in the house when hearing a very strong sound outside.

"I ran out and saw a man in wet clothes and a panicky face pointing to the pond and shouted “help! help!. I lighted the pond by a flashlight and saw the car was sinking. Nearly 10 people were mobilized to break the car door to rescue the victims but we were late," he said.

At the scene, the car rose from the pond surface, with deformed roof. Hundreds of people flocked to see the police examining the scene, performing autopsies and salvaging the vehicle. Traffic through the area was congested.

The car was salvaged this noon.
