Thanh Hoa (in yellow) remain atop the standings despite sharing points with Hoang Anh Gia Lai on Sunday.

Inspired by their seven consecutive wins in previous rounds, Thanh Hoa attacked fiercely right from the first whistle.

However, their confidence was dealt a blow in the 11th minute as Gia Lai’s Felix fired a beautiful left-footed free-kick to open the scoring.

The effective defensive line from the home side blocked Thanh Hoa’s concerted equalising efforts for the remainder of the first-half.

It was not until the 57th minute that Sunday became Thanh Hoa’s savior as he leveled the game with a cunning right-wing free-kick.

Felix could have put Gia Lai ahead once again 11 minutes later if his skillful strike had not grazed the crossbar.

Several more opportunities were created for both sides in the remainder of the match, but none of them were successfully converted into goals.

With one additional point won, Thanh Hoa remain atop the provisional V-League standings with 23 points, taking a safe six-point advantage over runners-up Becamex Binh Duong, who trounced SHB Da Nang 3-1 the same day.

In last Saturday’s matches, ninth-round runners-up Quang Ninh Coal surprisingly lost 3-6 to tenth-placed QNK Quang Nam while Dong Nai also stunned everyone with a narrow 1-0 victory over V-League giants Song Lam Nghe An.

Earlier on Friday, Hanoi T&T demolished Dong Tam Long An 6-1 while Hung Vuong An Giang won their second point this season following their 2-2 draw against XM The Vissai Ninh Binh.
