Thanh Hoa set record in mixed 4x400m relay event

They won the mixed 4x400m relay event in a time of 3min 23.06sec, smashing the previous mark set by HCM City in 2014 by 13 seconds.

Hanoi came second, followed by Ha Tinh.

Phan Thanh Binh of HCM City set a Games record of 47.31m in the men’s discus event, breaking the eight-year record of 46.02m held by Nguyen Khac Huy of Da Nang.

Khuat Phuong Anh of the hosts defeated SEA Games winner Vu Thi Ly of Ninh Binh in the women’s 800m event.

Anh ran 2:05.89 to set a new Games record.

Ly finished 2 seconds later to claim silver.

Le Thi Lai from Soc Trang won the women’s discus event with a throw of 44.92m, setting a new Games record.

Other gold medallists included Nguyen Van Lai in the men’s 10,000m after he secured gold in the 5,000m event on Tuesday.

Vu Thi Men of Nam Dinh won the women’s triple jump; Quach Thi Lan triumphed in the women’s 400m and Phan Khac Hoang topped the men’s 400m hurdles.

In shooting, Hanoi’s women set a new target in the 10m standard air rifle category with a score of 1,568 points. They beat their own old record of 1,029 points set at the previous Games four years ago.

The gymnasts started their tournament yesterday at the Quan Ngua Sports Palace.

World Cup winner Le Thanh Tung of HCM City had no difficulty in winning the men’s all-round event with 82.350 points.

Tung then took the second gold in the team event.

“I am happy with these medals. It will push me to work harder to prepare for the next events, including the 2019 SEA Games,” said Tung.

The women’s team gold went to Hanoi while the women’s individual title belonged to Nguyen Tienna Katelyn of Hai Phong.

Hanoi athletes win in badminton, table tennis

Hanoi topped the badminton events at the National Sports Games.

After 10 days of competition, the hosts won the men’s doubles through Pham Hong Nam and Do Tuan Duc, who beat Bao Minh and Duong Duc Bao from HCM City 21-15, 21-13 on November 28.

The team also pocketed the mixed doubles gold after injured Nam and his partner Mai Anh withdrew from the all-Hanoi final against Tuan Duc and Nhu Thao.

National badminton legend Nguyen Tien Minh of HCM City beat teammate Nguyen Hai Dang 21-12, 21-5 for the men’s singles title.

Dinh Thi Phuong and Do Thi Hoai lost 12-21, 21-23 to Da Nang duo Nguyen Thuy Linh and Nguyen Thi Phuong Ha.

Earlier, Linh took the women’s singles medal, defeating Phuong Thuy of Bac Giang 2-0.

Hanoi took the leading spot with two gold medals. HCM City and Da Nang were second and third.

Hanoi are also in the lead in table tennis after winning two gold medals on November 28.

In the women’s team class they trounced HCM City 3-0 while in the men’s team category they beat Hai Duong 3-1.

Players will compete in the doubles finals today and singles events will follow.

HCM City won both men’s and women’s 3x3 basketball events yesterday.

They defeated Can Tho 21-15 in the men’s final before overcoming Hanoi 19-14 on the women’s side.

Those were their third and fourth golds in basketball. Earlier they championed in men’s and women’s traditional basketball events.

Also in basketball, players Le Phuoc Thang and Le Van Day of Can Tho were banned for 10 years from all activities after they attacked referee Hoang Thong in a match against Binh Phuoc last week.

They were not allowed to appeal the decision by the Viet Nam Basketball Federation.

Thang and Day are popular names at national competitions. They were key players for Cantho Catfish in the Vietnam Basketball Association League. 

Thang was member of the national team at last year’s SEA Games in Malaysia.
