Pho Trach Village in Thua Thien-Hue Province has been a renowned location for rush mat weaving for hundreds of years.
Pho Trach Village is 50km north of the centre of Hue City. Every year artisans in Pho Trach Village produce a range of essential goods to meet the demands of local people. Rush mats are used in both hot and cold weather. Mat knitting is popular among a large number of the village workers, though most of the weavers are women. The craft skills have been handed down over many generations. The mats are hand-woven by local villagers. Tough and fibrous rushes are the main material used to weave the mats. Farmers harvest the rushes. Farmers carry the bundles back to their homes. The rushes are dried under the sun before they are ready for weaving into mats. Mats are one of key products. |
