VietNamNet’s reporters contacted an old teacher, who has been working for the last 30 years, to ask about his thoughts about Doi Ngo case. The old teacher has been respected by a lot of generations of students over the last many years, who believe that the teacher is high principled and beloved.
However, the old teacher also refused to make comments about the six teachers, who were found as lending a hand to the exam cheated students, because he thinks that he himself also many times made ashamed things.
“Teachers all want their students to become good and honest students. Why did the teachers at Doi Ngo High School still turn a blind eye to the students’ behavior of cheating at exams?”
Answering the question, he said: “The teachers turned a blind eye, because all others also turn a blind eye to the problems in education.”
Parents and students all want to pass the high school final exams after the students spent 12 years on learning hard which took much time and great efforts. Meanwhile, if they fail the exams, they would have to wait one year to attend the finals again. And if they cannot graduate high schools, they would not have the opportunities to find jobs to earn their living.
“We are always put under a hard pressure from parents and students. All of them want the teachers to help students grow up into excellent students and useful citizens of the society,” he continued.
The old teacher said sadly that he now has to give 6 to a school work which deserves 4 marks only. However, students still complain that the teacher gives too low grades. The problem is that students nowadays only accept good marks.
The high marks do not surprise anyone nowadays, because numerous students have good school results. In the past, 9 or 10 were given by the teachers only to excellent students’ school works. Meanwhile, at this moment, 9 or 10 are received by students every day.
The “achievement disease”, therefore, has been generated to show a phenomenon in the education sector, where teachers try to give high marks to their students to turn them into excellent students. It is simply because teachers would be hailed and rewarded, if their students obtain high learning achievements, while they would be punished, if their students fail the exams.
“You may read the articles on local newspapers which said that heads of education departments received blames from the provincial leaders for the slow growth of the percentage of students passing finals,” he said.
“I believe that no teacher would speak out about the violations. Teachers all want to be content with their lot,” he said.
A reader with the nickname “thoidai” emailed to Giao duc Vietnam newspaper, writing that the six teachers were punished too heavily.
“The teachers were disinterested. They did this just because they felt sorry for the students. If the students fail the exams, they would not have the chance to look for jobs to earn their living,” he wrote.
Another reader, Xuan Mai, said that in fact, the problem has been occurring not only at Doi Ngo, but at most of the schools nationwide, believing that it is unfair if only the Doi Ngo’s teachers receive punishment.
