In general, same-sex couples have to face many obstacles. They have to deal with societal prejudices, family barriers, and sometimes internal conflicts. Yet, driven by the desire to love and be loved, many are willing to overcome challenges to protect their love.
Ly Nhu Y, born in 1985, from Ca Mau and Du Tuyet Nhi, born in 1996, from Can Tho are such a couple.
Nhu Y realized her true gender identity during puberty. She only felt special emotions for those of the same gender, always longing for a girl's love and protection.
In 2021, Tuyet Nhi fell for Nhu Y after seeing a viral video of her, though they hadn't met or talked. Nhi took the initiative to message Y, expressing her desire to get acquainted.
Being 11 years older, Y was initially afraid of love. However, Nhi's perseverance and attentive messages touched her heart.
"With her genuine feelings, Nhi slowly made her way into my heart," Y recalled.
When her birthday neared, Nhi messaged Y, "Can I meet you on my birthday?" At that time, Y lived in Da Lat in Lam Dong province, while Nhi was in Binh Duong. They agreed to meet in Vung Tau.
"Upon our first meeting, I was captivated by Nhi's sincerity and adorableness, while Nhi was drawn to my gentleness and kindness. We've been together ever since," Y said.
The couple has maintained their relationship despite the long distance between them. Y specializes in wedding photography in Da Lat, while Nhi is a Chinese translator for a foreign company in Binh Duong. They keep in touch through messages and video calls.
Every month, they took turns visiting each other, making sure not to miss any meetings.
"Nhi often takes the initiative to visit me. She didn’t want me to endure the hardship of traveling. Once, she made a round trip within 24 hours just to see me. We've loved each other like this for many years," Y said.
What Y loves most about Nhi is her innocence, sincerity, and a little jealousy. Their age difference doesn't create any "gap" when they're together. They are compatible in every way, from thoughts to lifestyles.
The couple has never had a frank conversation about their true gender identity with their families. The love is still kept as a secret.
Y’s father passed away eight years ago. Her mother doesn’t accept a daughter who belongs to the LGBT community. Nhi’s parents might know the true gender of their daughter, but they turn a deaf ear to their love affair.
