VietNamNet Bridge – In thoughts of many people, those who come first at the
university entrance exams, must be the “bookworms,” or the children of well-off
families which can fund expensive learning courses. However, many of them
indulge in pleasures and the others are from very poor families.

Than Thi Thu, who came first at the entrance exam to the Da Nang University
The student who prefer pleasure to learning
Nguyen Kim Phuong, a math majoring student of the Thang Long High School for the
gifted in Da Lat City, introduced herself as the person who prefers pleasure to
learning.
Tuyen, the mother of Phuong, also confirmed that her daughter likes playing and
she usually has to remind the girl to review lessons.
Phuong said she only spends one hour in the evening to review lessons, while she
spent the other time on playing. She likes playing games, watching cartoons and
reading books. On weekend, Phuong goes out with friends to relax herself instead
of staying at home and getting absorbed in work.
However, Phuong is clever and she listens to the parents. And she has come first
at the entrance exam to the HCM City Medical and Pharmaceutical University with
30/30 marks.
Phuong said coming first at the exam was a nice surprise to her. Though Phuong
was always an excellent student, she never topped the class before. The most
outstanding character of the girl is that she can arrange time for both learning
and playing.
Phuong not only came first at the exam to the university, but she also got 25/30
marks from the entrance exams to the Mathematics Faculty of the HCM City
University of Education. Phuong introduces herself as a “normal person” with no
special ability. However, in fact, she has firm knowledge foundation, follows
logical way of thinking instead of trying to learning by heart.
When asked why Phuong decided to attend the exam to the medical school, she said
that her mother, who is working for the preventive medical center in Lam Dong
province, advised her to become a doctor. Besides, Phuong really wants to follow
the mother’s career.
The first laureate who has a special mother
When Tien was born, her mother passed away. Three years later, his father got
married for the second time. Therefore, the boy has been living with the aunt,
who has been staying single to grow Tien.
And the effort of the special mother has been awarded: Tien has come first at
the C-group entrance exam to the HCM City University of Social Sciences and
Humanity (C-group students have to attend the literature, history and geography
exams).
Hon, the special mother of Tien, said she is now happier than ever when hearing
that the nephew has got high marks from the most important exams in his life.
She said that she decided to stay single to spend all her time to grow the boy,
the son of the lovely younger sister, who died of the metrorrhagia after giving
birth at the age of 28.
Tien has been growing up together with the aunt, who had to work hard to earn
little money, but he was not emotionally deprived, even though she had no
mother.
The female student whose father is a pedicab driver
Than Thi Thu has come first at the C-group entrance exam to the Da Nang
University of Education, even though Thu never attended the exam preparation
classes.
Thu did not go to the classes simply because she did not have money to pay for
the tuitions. On summer days, when other students enjoy the holiday, Thu still
has to work hard: she sells coffee to earn money which she would need when
leaving for the city to study at the university.
The most valuable assets of Thu and her parents are the small TV, two bicycles
and an old pedicab.
The pedicab is the bread earner of Thu’s family. Every day, Thu’s father, 45,
who suffers from mental diseases, still has to drive pedicab to earn some money
to feed himself and the children.
