VietNamNet Bridge – ‘The Song of the Earth’ premiere performance will take place at the Hanoi Opera House today, July 12.

The large-scale work for two vocal soloists with tenor and alto voices and orchestra by the Austrian composer Gustave Mahler will also be performed on Friday.

The symphony will feature performances by the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra (VNSO), Swedish alto Anna Einarsson and Vietnamese tenor Trinh Thanh Binh under the baton of Japanese conductor Honna Tetsuji. Apart from ‘The Song of Earth,’ the show will also open with the work ‘Love Death’, the last chapter in the symphony Tristan and Isolde by German composer Richard Wagner.

The work, composed in the years 1908-1909, includes six separate movements, each of them an independent song. ‘The Song of the Earth’ is an integration of song cycles and symphony and a combination of Western and Eastern culture. It is involved with Buddhist teaching, conception about samsara (eternal cycle of love, suffering, death and rebirth).

The work was first performed publicly in Munich, Germany in 1911.

Einarsson studied at Malmo Music Conservatory in Sweden and Music Conservatory of Oslo in Norway. Trinh Thanh Binh is now working at the VNSO. He recently played Don Jose in classic Carmen.
