VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet visited his primary school teacher. The newly elected Communist Party’s Central Committee’s Secretary General Nguyen Phu Trong drove his motorbike to visit his old teacher. The two stories show how Vietnamese leaders continue to think about their teachers and how they treasure the people who gave them knowledge.

The President still cannot solve the problem as expected by his teacher

Before going to Hanoi to take up office as President of Vietnam, Nguyen Minh Triet came to see his primary school teacher, the one who once taught him on the resistance.

“I placed high hopes on you. I know you were very good at mathematics and you could solve mathematical problems very quickly.  And now you are going to take the post as the country’s president. I hope you can solve a new problem – fighting corruption,” the teacher told him.

“I well understand that the wish of my teacher is also the wish of all Vietnamese people. I am making every effort to do the things that the teacher told me to do, but honestly speaking, the results still don’t measure up to our expectations,” President Nguyen Minh Triet told Giao Duc Thoi Dai newspaper.

When asked to give assessments about the use of talents in Vietnam, the leader of the country said that he wants to renovate some methods and policies in order to better use talents, especially in the state-owned sector.

Quoting the words by poet Nguyen Trai, that “Vietnam is weak sometimes and strong at other times, but it never lacks talents”, Triet admitted that Vietnam still cannot take full advantage of Vietnamese talent.

Comparing the state-owned sector with private sector, the president emphasized that renovating the methods and the ieson using talent and human resources, especially in the state’s offices and state-owned enterprises is the thing that needs to be done urgently.

In a talk with Giao duc thoi dai newspaper, President Triet said that he and Vietnamese people can take pride in Vietnamese education. However, he said that there still are many problems: while students are good at theory, they are bad at practical applications. Meanwhile, the curriculums need to be re-discussed.

Party’s Central Committee’s Secretary General visited old teacher

“On that morning, we were so surprised to see Trong driving a motorbike to the school,” Dang Dinh Dai, former Headmaster of the Nguyen Gia Thieu High School, where the newly elected Communist Party’s Central Committee’s Secretary General Nguyen Phu Trong studied in his youth. Dai met Trong at a reunion party organized to congratulate their teacher on his longevity.

Dai added that while many state officials, who were also once the students of the 75-year-old teacher, suggested going to the teacher’s house on cars, Trong insisted on walking to the teacher’s house, though it was a long distance from the school to the house.

After Trong was elected the new Secretary General of the Party’s Central Committee’s, classmates, teachers and friends recall fond memories about Trong.

Le Duc Giang, a teacher, recalled that when he became the head teacher of 9B class, Trong was both the class monitor and the Youth Union’s Secretary. “He was very good at taking care of the class.  Classmates respected him because of his rhetoric and communication skills,” Giang said

Teacher Doan Thanh, 84, former Headmaster of the school, said he remembered that as Trong’s house was far from school, Trong had to board at a pagoda. “The student was very careful with his work and studies. We never had to warn him about anything,” Thanh said

The classmate of Trong at high school, Ngo Ba Duc, who was once the Headmaster of the Co Loa High School, said that when they were at 4th grade, Trong was considered one of the three most excellent students. Trong was very good at literature.

Later, Trong once quoted an excerpt from the Tale of Kieu to talk about himself and Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet. He also used Ho Chi Minh’s poems and folk verses when answering questions at the press conference held after he was elected as the new Secretary General of the Party’s Central Committee’s.
