VietNamNet Bridge – One day, parents realize their children’s ability of reading and doing sums, though the children are very small. They decide that the kids need to be well trained to prove their unusual ability. And the children’s tragedy begins.

Nguyen Phuc Truong and his teacher
There are so many pieces of news about the child prodigies in the provinces of Vinh Phuc, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa and Lam Dong on local newspapers in recent days that an educator calls this the “Vietnamese prodigy phenomenon.”

The prodigies with no childhood

In the eye of Thu Trang, a journalist of a printing newspaper, the son is wonderful and everything he does is admirable.

The kid now goes to nursery school, but his timetable is very busy with the lessons in Vietnamese language, English, mathematics, piano and painting. Trang has been trying to grow the child in accordance with the instructions by educators: the boy needs a reasonable regimen and an intensive education mechanism.

Trang once complained that the boy ate too much beefsteak while he stayed at the grandparent and got indigestion. Meanwhile, according to Trang, the boy needs to be fed up with fish only, because the food helps make the boy clever.

Another parent, after hearing from a fortune teller that her son would become a famous painter in the world and he would rise to fame in Italia, decided that the boy needs to study Italian language right now to prepare for the life in Italia later.

As such, the five year old boy, who is believed to become a prodigy, cannot spend his time playing with the children in the same residential quarter any more, and cannot go visiting relatives regularly, because he has to stay at home to study Italian with a tutor.

The boy also has to spend time to learn painting. Every picture of the boy will be sent to a famous painter, who gives assessment and advices. If the painter says the work is bad, the parents will force the boy learn harder.

Unlike other parents, who try to force their children to classes to obtain more scientific knowledge, Hai, a real estate billionaire, who just graduated secondary school, believes that no need to learn for high education degrees, while it would be better for his daughter to learn to become a member of the “upper class.”

Therefore, Linh, the girl, does not have to spend much time reviewing the school lessons everyday, but she has to go to vocal music and painting classes. The billionaire says to everyone he meets that his daughter is an art talent.

The child prodigies who learn to read before going to school

Several years ago, local newspapers wrote about a 3 year old child who could read and write fluently in Long An province. Just several days after article appeared on a newspaper, Chau, the father of the boy, received a phone call from a lawyer who represented a foreign company, who said that the company would like to obtain the right to grow and train the boy into a talent.

In order to obtain the right, the company would pay one million dollars to Chau. However, the parent refused to “sell” the child to foreigners, while calling on Vietnamese benefactors to give support to develop the boy’s talent.

No donator has been found, while the story about the child prodigy has fallen into oblivion.

When the 2011-2012 academic year began, the parents of Nguyen Phuc Truong, a first grader of the Nui Thanh Primary School in Da Nang City came to see Truong’s teachers, asking them to allow Truong to skip classes, because Truong could read and write, and do math exercises designed for the second or third graders already.

However, Nguyen Dang Ngung, Head of the Hai Chau district’s education sub-department, said after a test that the boy could read and calculate after he attended private tutoring lessons, while this is not the inborn ability.
