The results of recent scientific surveys have shown that the mangrove ecosystem on peat land in U Minh Thuong National Park has special significance. It is home to many rare species of wildlife that play an important role in the ecological balance.
Musk fox (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) is one of the typical animals of U Minh Thuong National Park.
Weighing
up to 1kg, the large “flying-fox” (Pteropus vampyrus Linnaeus) is a
giant bat species concentrated in U Minh Thuong forest. This bat lives
in large flocks in mangrove trees. They hang themselves in trees during
the daytime and fly long distances to find food at night. The food of
this species is mainly nectar or fruits such as rambutan, mango, and
durian.
Fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus).
The Banna caecilian or Ichthyophis bannanicus is a special species of amphibian in U Minh Thuong.
The
Lesser Adjutant (Leptoptilos javanicus) is a large wading bird in the
stork family Ciconiidae. This is a rare bird species in U Minh Thuong.
Like other members of its genus, it has a bare neck and head. It is,
however, more closely associated with wetland habitats where it is
solitary and is less likely to scavenge than the related Greater
Adjutant.
The clouded monitor (Varanus nebulosus) is a species of monitor lizard. It is the biggest lizard species in Vietnam.
U Minh Thuong is home to a large population of wild boars (Sus scrofa).
The hairy-nosed otter (Lutra sumatrana) is one of the rarest otter species in the world.
Leopard pythons (Python reticulatus) may grow to be 6-7m long.
The Java Pangolin (Manis. javanica) is a unique mammal species.
