VietNamNet Bridge – Attending university entrance exams to follow university education proves to be the choice of most high school graduates. However, many students attend the exams because they are forced to do that.

The extraordinary courage of Vietnamese students

Trang was born into a well off family, where her parents run a big guest house in Nam Dinh City. The only thing Trang had to do was going to school every day, while other works were covered by her parents.

Like her classmates, Trang also decided to attend the university entrance exams after finishing high school. However, the only thing Trang wants to do is being present at the exam room, while she does not care about the results, because her education would be arranged by her parents.

Before Trang left for Hanoi to attend the exams, the parents gave her 7 million dong, a huge sum of money which they hoped would be enough for Trang for some days, because they heard that “everything is very expensive in Hanoi.”

Trang arrived in Hanoi on June 29, some days before the exam day. However, she did not spend time on reviewing lessons to prepare for the exams, but to do the sightseeing and enjoying the delicious dishes in Hanoi. If she did not go out, she just lied without getting up in her room watching TVs or chatting online with friends.

“I needed to relax to get fresh when entering the exams,” she explained.

After two exam days, Trang returned to Nam Dinh. When asked about the exam, Trang said that she could not solve many exam questions. However, this is not her worry, because “my parents would take care about my future.”

Hung from Tuyen Quang province decided to attend the university entrance exam just because this would give him the opportunity to travel to the capital city and because he wanted to shirk works.

While Hung’s parents were busy with the harvesting, Hung stayed in Hanoi to spend money. The traveled around Hanoi with taxi, visited his friends at the Hanoi Industry University and watched TVs. Especially, Hung did not miss any football matches, though he had to stay up late at night.

Meanwhile, many other students reportedly disappeared from the exam rooms for different reasons.

A mother was seen weeping and entreating her daughter to attend the exam at the HCM City Industry University on July 4. Only when seeing the girl entered the exam room, did the mother left the school.

“My daughter said she wanted to attend the university entrance exam. I allowed her to register to attend the exam, even though I knew she is not really good at learning, and it is very costly to stay in Hanoi. However, some days ago, she suddenly decided to give up,” the mother explained.

The girl, like many other students, attended the exams just to satisfy their parents, while they understood that they would not pass the exams. Meanwhile, children’s university education is the dream of all parents; no matter they are in urban or rural areas. Especially, the parents in the countryside believe that university education is the only opportunity that helps them get a better life.

However, many students, though agreeing to go to Hanoi to attend the exams, did not turn up at the exam rooms.

A woman who was seen in front of a school in HCM City, said that she had to keep a close watch over the son, because she feared the son would “disappear” like he did last year.

The boy also registered to attend the exam last year. However, he was not present at the exam room. Only when the boy called his mother, asking her to pay the debts he incurred at the online games shop, did the mother realize that the boy was not at exam room, but at game shop.
