VietNamNet Bridge - With brightly colored hair, they are praised by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) as the "beauty queen" in the monkey world.

That's the red-shanked species (also known as scrub douc, scientific
name is Pygathrix nemaeus) of Vietnam.

They are one of the few species of monkey in
the world with quite vibrant colors.

This monkey is sometimes called the "costumed ape" for its
extravagant appearance. From its knees to its ankles it sports
maroon-red "stockings," and it appears to wear white forearm
length gloves. Its attire is finished with black hands and feet.
The golden face is framed by a white ruff, which is considerably
fluffier in males. The eyelids are a soft powder blue. The tail is white
with a triangle of white hair at the base. Males of all ages have a
white spot on both sides of the corners of the rump patch, and red and white genitals.

Unfortunately, this beautiful monkey species is
seriously threatened in the wild.

Their living areas are declining due to deforestation.

They are also threatened by illegal hunting.

Not long ago, pictures of the murder of red-shanked langurs
on Internet stirred up the public opinion.

According to Vietnamese’s thought, the meat of monkeys
in general is a "panacea" for men.

It is estimated that the number of red-shanked langurs in Vietnam
over the past 10 years has been reduced by at least 50%.

International experts said that this is one of the most endangered
 primates in the world.

Without effective safeguards, red-shanked langurs will face extinction.
