The HCM City native, who sits at 130 in the world junior rankings, lost 6-7, 6-7 to his number 50 rival in the boy's singles competition.

The 16-year-old will continue to pair with Thai player Koaykul in the boy's doubles and will face Australia's Ahne and China's Li in the first round.

The tournament is part of an International Tennis Federation series for group 1 junior players, which has attracted top players looking to score points for the coming season.

In September, Thien, the first Vietnamese player to take part in the Australian Open Tennis Tournament for under 18 players, won the men's singles and doubles' titles of the Hong Kong Open Junior Tennis Championships.
