VietNamNet Bridge - Nguyen Thanh Hieu, the mother of a third grader, complained that Vstar, a private school in district 7 in HCM City, has refused to admit her son because Hieu complained about that tie of the school uniform was badly designed.

Hieu, 35, said in May 2015, she wrote some comments about the school uniform designed by Vstar School on her Facebook page.

Hieu compared the tie on Vstar’s school uniform with the tie of the students’ uniform of a school in South Korea and concluded that the tie of South Korean students was better designed and more easy to wear. Meanwhile, with the unreasonable design, it is difficult for small students to wear every morning when they do not have much time to prepare to go to school.

On August 3, Hieu heard from some other parents that VStar prepared to open the new academic year, but she did not receive any notice from the school.

Hieu then went to Vstar and met Huynh Chau Loc, deputy headmaster of the school. Loc told her that as the school could not contact Hieu some months ago, Hieu did not know that her son had been expelled from school.

According to Hieu, the deputy headmaster said to her: “If you even cannot tie a tie for your son, this shows that you don’t have necessary skills a mother needs to have. Why did you comment on a social network that our school uniform tie is bad? We find it very beautiful. Why do you compare our school uniform tie with a South Korean school’s? Why did you not erase your entries on Facebook? We decided not to admit your son."

Chu Thi Ngoc Thinh, headmaster of Vstar, denied that the school decided not to admit the student because of his parents’ complaints about the school uniform.

Thinh said in Tuoi Tre that Vstar is a private school and it values every student, therefore, the school’s management board will not refuse a student because of a nonsensical reason.

She said that after writing her criticism on Facebook, the parent (Hieu) decided herself that her son will leave the school.

Thinh went on to say that she could not understand why the parent did not think of making suggestions or complaints directly to the teachers she met every day, or coming to see the managers, but complained on Facebook.

A lot of educators and parents have expressed their sympathy towards Hieu. They have warned that the unreasonable attitude of the school will hurt the student psychologically.

Lawyer Dang Van Cuong said that the school’s decision to expel the student might have violated the education law.
