VietNamNet Bridge – Though the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has set up the minimum requirements for students to apply for studying at universities, a lot of schools have ignored the regulations, enrolling incapable students.

Dying for thirst for learners

Over the last two years, the Tan Tao University in Long An province has been struggling to look for students, though the school can enroll 500 students a year only.

Only 73 students attended the entrance exams to the school last summer, who applied for studying in nine majors. However, only 56 students got the exam marks equal or higher than the floor mark stipulated by the Ministry of Education and Training.

The ministry sets up the floor mark every year after considering the learning demand and the results of the national university entrance exams. Only the students, who get the floor marks or higher, would have the opportunities to enroll in one or another school.

However, since the number of students meeting the requirements set up by the ministry is modest, while there are many schools that need students to train, many schools, especially local ones, have no students to enroll. Therefore, schools have to try every possible method to lure more students.

In an effort to find enough students, the Tan Tao University has offered attractive scholarships for excellent students. Especially, the school has promised to enroll students by considering the learning records of students instead of the university entrance exam marks.

Those, who have the average learning record of 7.0 in the three years at high schools, would be eligible for enrolling in the school.

Besides, the school has also offered preferences to the students from the provinces, where the Tan Tao Group has investment projects, such as Long An, Kien Giang, Binh Duong, Quang Nam, Ha Nam and Hai Phong. The students just need to have 6.5 points to be able to study at the school.

The Ha Hoa Tien University plans to enroll 900 students this year, but this is really a very difficult task.

In 2011, the school could only find 120 students. The student, who came first at the A-group entrance exams to the school only got 12.5/30 marks, while the students, coming first at other-group exams got 14.

256 students registered to attend the latest entrance exams to the school, but only 50 percent of them got the marks equal or higher than the floor marks. This means that the other 50 percent would not have the opportunities to enter the school, or any other school nationwide.

In order to attract students, the school has organized a lot of marketing campaigns in localities and has stated to exempt tuition for one month for the students, who agree to study at the school.

Bigger schools do not lack students for the university education system (4-5-year training), but lack students for the junior college education (3-year training). Therefore, they have decided to seek students for the junior college education among those, who failed the exams to the university classes.

The An Giang University has sent notices to the students who pass the exams to the husbandry, informatics education, biology education majors, asking them to register other majors, because the number of learners is not big enough to organize training courses.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Bui Van Ga has threatened to impose heavy fine on the schools which break the laws to enroll sub-standard students.
