VietNamNet Bridge – HCM City officials and thousands of people on December 25 saw Prof. Tran Van Giau to the last resting place.

 

Nation mourns death of southern veteran

 

Prof. Giau was born in Setpember 6 1911 in Long An province, southern Vietnam. He studied at the Chasseloup Laubat High School in Saigon and then studied in France.

 

In France, he joined the campaigns against French colonialism and was arrested. In mid-1930, he was expelled. Returning to Vietnam, he became a member of the Indochina Communist Party. Tran Van Giau was close to the August Revolution in southern Vietnam.

 

Prof. Giau is the author of many scholarly works and history books about Vietnam as well as philosophic works. He is also the teacher of many leading researchers and historians in Vietnam.

 

Many of his books were presented state awards.

 

In 2001, Prof. Giau sold his house and donated 1000 taels of gold to the Vietnam Historical Sciences Association to establish a fund and award for outstanding historical works about southern Vietnam.

 

Prof. Giau received many noble awards and titles, including the Ho Chi Minh Medal, the Labor Hero of the Renovation Period, the People’s Teacher, Ho Chi Minh Award, etc.

 

At the age of 100, his health was very poor. He was hospitalized at the Thong Nhat Hospital in HCM City since early 2010 and he was treated at the hospital until he passed away.

The ceremony was aired live on the HCM City Television.

The funeral ceremony was very solemn.

Officials of HCM City, Long An province (Prof. Giau’s hometown) and many

other provinces and scientists attended the ceremony.

The coffin was brought to a car.

The ceremony finishes at 8.45am.

The professor is laid to rest in his hometown – Long An.
