Colonel Chien will be in charge of research and manufacturing at the group, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Phuong will take responsibility for business, and Senior Lieutenant Colonel Thang will take charge of foreign investment.

CEO of the Viettel Group, Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, said the appointment of the three new Deputy General Directors is to nurture talent in the group. Viettel is now in the process of becoming a multinational group after a period of building up its human resources amid a telecommunications boom. Leaders of the group must therefore have the ability to lead Viettel in competing with global giants.

Colonel Chien joined Viettel in 2001 and has held positions such as Head of the Technology Department at Viettel Telecom, Director of Viettel Technologies, and Director of Viettel R&D. He successfully researched and developed eight military technologies, such as airspace management systems and unmanned aircraft. His appointment shows that Viettel is targeting the military technology sector.

Senior Lieutenant Colonel Phuong has worked at Viettel since 1996. He was previously the Deputy Director of a mobile phone company, Director of an internet company, Head of the Marketing Department at the group, and CEO of Viettel Telecom. He is expected to push a second boom for Viettel in Vietnam’s telecommunications sector.

Senior Lieutenant Colonel Thang joined Viettel in 2005. He was formerly the Director of the Technology Center at Viettel Telecom, Deputy Director of Viettel Telecom, CEO of the Viettel Network Company, and CEO of Viettel Global. He has made significant contributions to Viettel achieving a foothold in nine countries on three continents.

The appointment of the three new deputy general directors is part of strategy to strengthen Vietnam’s three key pillars: telecommunications, domestic IT, and foreign IT.
