The dead include Ho Thi Tram, 81, Ho Bich Ngoc, 11, and Duong Tu Quyen, seven months old.

Party Secretary Nguyen Binh Tan of Vinh Loi District said that some victims with minor injuries have been discharged from various hospitals, while others with serious injuries have been transferred to central hospitals for further treatment.

According to the initial investigation, on Tuesday afternoon, Thach Sa Khen (also known as Sa Phen), 35, who lives in Hung Hoi Commune, suddenly attacked a number of local people with a knife.

As soon as they were informed of the incident, police from Vinh Loi District coordinated with relevant forces to try to control Khen. All the victims were rushed to the communal health care station and Bac Lieu General Hospital for emergency treatment.

All of the affected persons did not have any conflict with Khen, according to police. Some people speculated that he had committed the crime under the influence of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice”.

Khen, who is being detained for further investigation, has suffered a mental disorder for about 10 years, according to police.

An investigation is underway.
