Troian Aleksei, 33, and Bondarenko Yury, 44, were sentenced to six years and six months of imprisonment each. Kotets Viacheslav, 30, was sentenced to six years of imprisonment.

According to the indictment, the three men entered Viet Nam on October 20 last year and started to use fake automated teller machine (ATM) cards to withdraw money.

From October 20 to 23, they used fake ATM cards to withdraw VND44 million (US$1,900) from different banks in HCM City.

From October 24 to 27, the Russians withdrew nearly VND250 million ($11,100) in Nha Trang City in the central province of Khanh Hoa.

Troian Aleksei was caught red-handed by the Khanh Hoa Police on the night of October 27.

The police seized more than 200 fake ATM cards and other tools, including laptops and mobile phones.

While being temporarily detained for investigation, Troian Aleksei used several tools in the detention room to bore a hole in the wall in an attempt to escape. He was, however, caught by the police.
