VietNamNet Bridge - A fisherman in Phu Dien commune, Phu Vang district, in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue province caught a rare turtle of 85kg in weight and 85cm long on January 2.



According to experts, this is a Quan Dong sea turtle with the scientific name Cretta caretta, which lives primarily in the area between Bach Long Vy Island and Cat Ba Island in the northern port city of Hai Phong.

The turtle is listed as a rare and endangered species by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). CITES has banned hunting, trading, and transporting the rare species, including its eggs.

Defining that the turtle is an endangered species, the fisherman, named Nguyen Thanh, reported to the local authorities and released the turtle back to the sea at 01.00pm of the same day.
