The beggar declared himself as Mr. Vo Thanh Chau, 77, a native of the southern province of An Giang. He went to Tien Giang to work as a beggar.

Checking the beggar’s bag at 8am on January 7, when the man had just begged at the My Tho Market, the police found over VND800,000 ($40), an iPhone 3 and a Nokia cell phone, an ATM under his name, and a piece of paper noting the banking account of a woman named Vo Thi Lan.

The beggar said that Lan is his granddaughter and sometimes he transferred several hundreds of thousand dong or VND1 million (several tens of USD) to this woman.

According to My Tho City police, after verification of the case, they will fine and expel the beggar from the city.
