At the police station, Qu admitted that he had put poisonous substances into the formula milk of his 83-year-old grandmother Pham Thi Phan and his 45-year-old father Pham Van Yen, leading to their deaths.
According to a report from the police, Pham Van Yen was found dead on his bed at 6 am on October 14. The family thought that he died from a stroke and held a funeral for him.
At 10 pm the same day, Phan's daughter Pham Thi My Co, 53, prepared 100ml of formula milk for her. Just five minutes later, the elderly woman developed breathing difficulties and began vomiting. She died shortly after that while being taken to the hospital. The family also thought she died from old age and underlying diseases. They held a funeral for her without carrying out an autopsy.
Then in the early morning of October 15, Phan's son Pham Minh Tan, 55, prepared 150ml of milk taken from his mother's formula milk carton to drink. He quickly developed the same symptoms of headaches, breathing difficulties and vomiting and was rushed to a local hospital.
Tan then had to be transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in HCM City where he was given intensive treatment for food poisoning.
Tien Giang Police launched an investigation into the case and Qu became a suspect.
Qu told the police that after his parents divorced when he was six. He and his two siblings followed his mother to live in Cai Be District. The teenager dropped out of school two years ago and was working at a fruit shop owned by his aunt.
Qu sometimes visited his grandmother and father over the past two years. As his father was frequently drunk and often scolded him, Qu decided to kill his father.
On October 13, Qu asked for some dog bait from a local man, saying that he wanted to kill some wild dogs around his home.
At 11 pm the same day, he put the poison into the formula powder milk carton that his grandmother and father usually used.
