Vietnamese No.1 player Nguyen Tien Minh easily defeated Thai rival Boonsak Ponsana 2-0 in the men’s badminton singles at the 2014 Asian Games (ASIAD 17) on September 25.
It took Minh only 13 minutes to thrash Ponsana 21-10 in the first set.
Minh (ranked 23rd in the world) continued to dominate the second set, handily defeating Ponsana (ranked 14th in the world) in a 16-minute set, which ended with a score of 21-15.
Tien Minh next faces Indonesian rival Mustofa Ihsan (ranked 281st in the world) in the third round.
His teammate Pham Cao Cuong lost to Indian competitor Srikanth 21-23 and 8-21.
Doubles Prapakamol-Thoungthongkam (Thailand) triumphed over Le Thu Huyen-Do Tuan Duc (Vietnam) 21-12, 21-13.
Vietnam has now garnered a total of one gold, four silver and fifteen bronze medals at the tourney.
