The six-day event is expected to draw the attendance of most of the world’s top players despite its modest prize money of US$200,000.

In the first round of play, Tien Minh, ranked fifth in the world, faces a tough challenge from world no. 10 Wang Zhengming of China. In their two most recent meetings, Minh outplayed his Chinese rival by the same score of 2-1.

At last year’s tournament, Minh had to stop in the quarterfinal round after losing 0-2 to Hong Kong opponent Hun Yun.

Tien Minh is currently performing superbly at the 2013 YONEX Chinese Taipei Open, coasting through the second round following a rewarding 2-0 victory over Taiwanese world no. 337 Yang Shengjie yesterday (Sept 5).
